Our
practices spring
from Wixarika reverence
for the totality of the universe, and we are helped by our knowledge
of the ways of our traditional medicinal herbs, the vibrations
of the Earth, the winds and rain, and all of our relations in
the animal and insect worlds.
We
come from a family line of Mara'akames, or medicine
people. We are pure-blood Wixarika people,
and our father, who was also a shaman in our village of birth,
recognized
us as potential Mara'akames before we were born. Both
Jaichima's and Rutury's training began while
we were in the womb. We
use ancient practices that take a lifetime to master and which
defy
explanation. Misguided attempts at these practices would be
both profane and dangerous. We take delight in supporting
your
healing,
the object of
which
is to help
you
uncover your deepest self, rather than to teach you how to
be a Huichol or Wixarika person. Neither
do we train you in Mara'akame or
shamanic practices, nor allow people to become followers. We
do not wish to control you, but to help you in your healing.
What we do is sacred and powerful and must
be preserved intact within
our own culture.
You
may have seen or heard about Wixarika shamanism.
Controversy abounds
on this subject; we don't wish to enter this debate.
Our healing work is not a snake-oil
instant 'cure'. Like other healing practices, our work with
you takes time. This work requires profound,
sustained commitment on the part of both healer and subject.
All humans
instinctually desire learning and growth. The
healing arts that we and our ancestors practice and preserve
rely on your efforts as much as on that of our spirit, animal,
and plant helpers. We take great
care to observe what is most profound and delicate in you, and
it is our mastery of faculties beyond what is
currently understood in western healing practices that makes
it possible for us to calibrate our work with you according to
your inner timetable. To try to use these arts to cut away
your challenges in one or two sessions or workshops would
be dangerous and disrespectful of the strength of your truest
self, and could actually re-traumatize you.
In
our commitment to everyone's health, safety, and integrity, we
do not use or allow the use of peyote or
any other drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or mind-altering substances
at the Center. We do however honor the sacred
use of tobacco at the Center by indigenous North Americans
in traditional ceremonial practices.
